hungrybecky, posting in debunkingwhite @ 11:23 pm: Has anyone seen WALL-E?

For those who haven't, it's a Pixar children's movie in which all of humanity has been in a spaceship for 700 years because the Earth has become uninhabitable.

I was shocked because in this movie "all of mankind" is portrayed as about 90% white and 10% black. Where are all the Asians??? and everyone else? I saw one dude that looked like he might have been Pacific Islander, but that's it.

This movie debuted at #1, and I've seen a bunch of reviews of it, and none of them have mentioned race. Is anyone else as surprised as I am about this? @_@

Would anyone in the south or east bay (concord/pleasant hill) know where I can find one of these? I was going to buy one online, but it slipped my mind:/ Long story short, I have five days to come up with one (I'm not buying online, shipping will be too much $$$ for a speedy delivery) and I'm sure there's a handful of places that have them...I'm just not sure where to start looking. Any help is appreciated!

coldwarunicorn6, posting in sfbayarea @ 09:03 pm: Laurel Heights?
My boyfriend and I just looked at an apartment in Laurel Heights--I loved it/the neighborhood/its proximity to the Exploratorium, where I work, but my boyfriend is unsure because the area is so quiet (he actually likes the chaos that is Van Ness and Eddy, where we live now; I absolutely hate it). For anyone who lives/has lived there, what is there to do? Is there any sort of nightlife or shopping to speak of, or is it more suburban?
Any advice is hugely appreciated.

Maybe my mythical hardware store could be called something about "Do It Yourself" since that's the common theme of the stuff I want to carry-- cook for yourself, do your own home repairs, etc. How about "DIDS" for "Do It your Damn Self"? Self Reliance Inc.? "Jane of All Trades" (play on "Jack of All Trades" + my middle name is Jane), though I worry that a store with "Jane" in its name will scare away the guys. No matter what, my tagline can be this great Heinlein quote:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

In other news I want to share this delightful "impromptu" dance number in Union Square. I love bay area folks and their playfulness.

Also fun is this Russian "synchronized swimming" video:

And this super cool video of a crumbling but spectacular walkway used to get to a climbing area in Spain:

muchamuse, posting in oaklandca @ 12:19 pm: Hill From Hell - Wallace Street Ruins

After years of neglect and endless legal entanglements - Oakland is finally proposing a move on the hazardous properties that are collapsing from Wallace Street towards 14th Ave.

Join your neighbors who live on or near Wallace Street to speak to the Public Advisory Committee for the Central City East Redevelopment.
The CCE Redevelopment PAC will be considering funding to address the three blighted structures on Wallace.

Let your voice be heard! This is the time to speak about the damage these structures have caused our neighborhood.

Demand Action!

Monday, July 7, at 6:30pm - 8:30pm.
Patten University, Student Activity Center, at 2433 Coolidge Avenue. (Enter pedestrian walkway on Coolidge, walk up to the center of the campus courtyard and turn left down the incline to the very large meeting room visible through the glass doors and windows.)

Hope to see you there!

zyzzyva23, posting in sanfrancisco @ 08:35 am: So... why not call it 'Frisco'?
I've lived here a little over eight years now. Even before that, I knew that there was no better way to identify yourself as a clueless out-of-town yokel than to call our beloved city "Frisco". Such an act is considered every bit as rude as loudly addressing a Parisian in English, and is liable to make you the butt of ridicule or worse.

I cringe myself whenever I hear the abominable word uttered, but... why? Yes, I know about Emperor Norton's edict, but come on. No one really took what else he said seriously. I've also read that everyone used the word back in Norton's days, visitor and local alike.

And let's face it: "San Francisco" is a mouthful. Sure, you can call it, "The City," if you're comparing it to elsewhere in the area, but it smacks of pretension and is downright laughable to a New Yorker. "SF" is fine in writing (as long as the context is enough to prevent confusion with science fiction) but never really caught on when talking. So really, WTF?

sfgabe, posting in sf_for_free @ 01:18 am: Red State @ Dolores Park, Sunday 1:30
First of all, it's not miming, its a play, it's got words, it's even got songs. Second it's political satire, but not the annoying kind, the-funny-because-its-true kind and totally family friendly picnic park fun. Third, I saw it today. it is awesome and FREE.

What if a small town found itself at the forefront of a political fight? It's Election Day in small town America, and that's what happens when, due to an Electoral College tie, the entire Presidential Election comes down to the one tiny town. Suddenly, the ignored, disregarded Bluebird, Kansas is the most important town in America. And they are being pressured to quickly cast the deciding vote, and vote the "right way."

But what would happen if they decided to wait? Can one little town hold an entire nation's election hostage? Should it? Is bread on the farm house dinner table tonight more important than deciding who sits at the Oval Office desk tomorrow? Yep, this election could take a while . . .

kanin @ 09:09 pm: Recommendations
People in my life that I cannot recommend highly enough. Please go see them if you need their services.

Skin Care
My esthetician, Joyce, treats me in ways that always make me feel like a million bucks when I leave, no matter how I felt going in. As a wellness consultant and general outstanding person, she manages to give me whatever I need, whether it be waxing my eyebrows or telling me stories about her new kittens or gently asking how I'm doing. My skin and my spirit thank me every time I go see her at Skin for Life. (Pacific Heights, SF)

Haircutter
Today I showed up to my hair cut, only to find my appointment had been erased and someone else scheduled! I was super sad but Dale, my haircutter, managed to fit me in! This is completely typical of his behavior. I don't know why everyone in town isn't using him since he gives great haircuts, charges reasonably, and acts in a very professional manner. Plus he has a mystical ability to guide me towards what I really want to do with my hair. Either that or he's brainwashing me but at least I'm happy! Call La Tour Salon and get an appointment with him. (Elmwood, Berkeley)

Doctor
I love my doctor to death but I think she works too hard, so I will not recommend you see her. I want her to take a break! Another one of the strong, wise older women in my life (along with Joyce the esthetician above) who take the time to talk with me and share of themselves. Someday I hope that I can learn to give of myself in the same unjudgemental and caring way. (Sunset, SF)

I like my Montclair dentist, Laurie Shepherd, and Union Square dermatologist, Vail Reese, but can't recommend them as strongly as the above folks.

Including a picture of my kitty cuz I can:

whittles @ 08:48 pm: looking for a place in
A friend in Berkeley has a stunning house with an adorable little cottage in the back and it looks like the cottage is up for rent.  If my situation weren't already heading in a direction then I would totally want to live there.
If you know anyone looking, please pass this along.

The Rose Street cottage is available starting August 1st. The person living there is moving in with her boyfriend.

The place is small but very sweet and private. There is one room that fits a desk, dresser, and full/double bed. Folks have also fit a closet in there.

Then there is a separate small kitchen with fridge and gas stove that fits a small table and a separate bathroom. The floors in the main room are wood, in the bathroom and kitchen there is tile. There are nice windows, French doors and a skylight.

I have a vanity and mirror available if someone wants it as a dresser. Otherwise it’s unfurnished.

The rent is $850 which includes water, PG&E and DSL.

Please pass this onto anyone that you think might be interested.

Thanks!

Sara

kanin @ 08:42 pm: Status Check
Yesterday was good. Woke up, made a nectarine/blueberry/raspberry crisp (all organic except for the tapioca starch, pecans, nutmeg & cinnamon) and traveled with Dan to Aptos (6 mi. S of Santa Cruz) to attend a party. Way fun. Great food, good conversation and a fire pit. The fireworks on the beach of Aptos were out of control and fun to watch. Wish I had pictures, at least of the crisp!! Next time.

Today was my beauty day: I saw Joyce, my awesome esthetician and Dale, my kickass haircutter. Dale cuts hair in Elmwood so I took a nice leisurely walk there and back and once again fell in love with my neighborhood(s). Will it ever stop? I patronized a few small businesses, including the wonderful "Videots", the cute video shop in Elmwood. It appears that video rentals are down (Netflix, anyone?) and I feel bad for them. I think I have a wayward nostalgia gene that makes me get unreasonably attached to things of the past. I hope they can survive, I enjoyed wandering around and picking out a movie. Maybe if I don't open a kitchenware/hardware shop I could open up an "Obsoleted" store where you could rent movies and buy music on cd.

Last weekend Dan and I went on a sedate camping trip on the Sonoma Coast. It wasn't as isolated as we would have liked but we still had a nice time. The weekend before that my mom came to visit. We watched WALL•E, visited gardens, saw a ball game (Go A's!) and spent time cooking and chatting. Speaking of mom I'm proud to announce she's been published in "Compliance Today", the national magazine of the Health Care Compliance Association! She co-wrote an article about patient requests to amend their medical record, the hot topic on everyone's minds, I know. :)

More adventures to come!
